Our Stonehaven Summer Guide

We love Stonehaven in the summer and think there’s no better time to pay us a visit. So, we’ve put together a guide to make sure you’re seeing the best of the town next time you’re here.

Dunnottar Castle

Explore this romantic cliff top ruin with a rich history and a big role in Scottish history. It was Dunottar Castle which held out against Oliver Cromwell’s army for eight months to save the Scottish crown jewels from destruction. A perfect place to brush up on your history while enjoying the stunning views and some bracing sea air.

Harbour Festival, 24th August

Come down to the harbour side and enjoy a sunny day of entertainment, including a lifeboat display by the RNLI, a sandcastle competition, boat trips, lots of stalls, and all the food you can eat. Always a fun afternoon out.

Go for a dip

If the sea’s a bit nippy, take a dip in Stonehaven’s Olympic-size outdoor pool – heated of course! You could even head down for a midnight dip during July and August, every Wednesday from 10pm. Enjoy a swim under the stars!

A spot of birdwatching

Head just down the road to RSPB Fowlsheugh to see some native Scottish wildlife. Explore the reserve and take in the stunning views of the cliffs – during the summer, keep an eye out for the young seabirds getting ready to leave the nest. Closer to the ground you’ll see all sorts of butterflies and moths making the most of the wild flowers, and if you’re lucky you may even spot whales or dolphins out at sea.

The beach

Of course, no summer list would be complete without the lovely Stonehaven beach. Great for a walk with the dogs or the kids, even if it’s not quite sunbathing weather. And what goes perfectly with the beach? Fish and chips, and maybe an ice cream too.

Looking forward to seeing you in Stonehaven this summer.
